Things to do in the area

South Somerset is a hidden gem, the beautiful villages and undulating landscape comes as a surprise to many who assume Somerset is entirely flat. Below are a few local activities or places of interest, some with our favourite places to eat in the vicinity.  For more local food recommendations check out our where to eat page, it's been difficult keeping the list short!

Local Walks

Esme's Escape is perfectly located for local walks as the Monarch's Way and Liberty Trails literally pass the entrance.

The local cricket club shown in the image is around a mile's walk along a footpath across farmland, or a very short drive if walking isn't your thing.

We provide Ordinance survey maps of South Somerset and West Dorset, plus a  leaflet published by the tourist board detailing popular local walks in the district.

Historic Houses and Gardens

Montacute House, Barrington Court, Lytes Cary and Tintinhull Gardens are all National Trust properties in the local area.

The first two featured in the TV drama series Wolfe Hall along with Forde Abbey & Gardens (just 20 minutes away), and Wells Cathedral (less than an hour to the smallest city in our country).

While in Montacute it's well worth a stroll around the chocolate box village and a walk around Ham Hill, a popular country park.  The banner photo on this page features the memorial at the top of Ham Hill. The Prince of Wales is an equally popular pub with walkers and dog owners.

Visit the Somerset Levels

The Levels are a wonderful area to explore, whether you prefer messing about on the water, walking or cycling, the landscape provides a relaxed environment to spend time in.

There is a cycle hire in Langport if you don't have your own bikes, you can also hire paddle boards so there really is no excuse.

Our favourite cafe is the Kitchen at the Warf, which is next to the river, lovely food, reasonably priced, friendly service too.

The Jurassic Coastline

If you love the sea you'll want to visit the coast while here, it's only 30 minutes drive from Esme's Escape.

This photo is of the famous cliffs at West Bay. There's a popular walk from there over the headlands to The Anchor at Seatown, very good food!  If you want more of a challenge you can walk past the pub over 'Golden Cap', or, you can forego the exercise, stay at the beach and simply enjoy the sea.

Many of our guests start with West Bay then take the A35 to Charmouth and/or Lyme Regis.  Both of these town are popular, Lyme Regis has a wider choice of shops including some adorable independents.  Both are famous for fossil hunting, if you're not sure how to start you can book a guided experience.

Driftwood Art Workshop

Why not get creative while here, build your own keepsake of your stay in Somerset.  Dan Wakeman Driftwood Artist will welcome you to his workshop in West Coker where you can craft a heart or mini woolly cow under Dan's expert guidance.

Willow Sculpture Workshop

Another amazingly talented sculptor this time using willow, Jo Sadler puts on workshops in the local area. Each workshop focuses on a different animal.  Visit her website to select which you'd prefer to create from; leaping hares, to Owls, from Spring deer to pigs, you'll be amazed by your own results.  You may well need to check out Jo's availability before booking your stay at Esme's Escape.
